Why I switched from rap to afrobeats – Victony

Sensational Anthony Ebuka Victor, also known as Victony, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter who recently said that he changed the genre of his music from hip-hop to afrobeats in order to “try something new.”

The 22-year-old claimed that the pandemic quarantine provided him with the chance to learn more about himself.

Together with BNXN and Ayra Starr, Victony covered Teen Vogue’s Africa’s New Wave issue.

The “Soweto” crooner said, “The aura, the feeling during lockdown was really different, and that drove me to want to do something new.

“However, as I entered the Afrobeat scene, I discovered that it was even more difficult because relatability is a crucial component of Afrobeat. But you still have to make sense while doing that. You still need to use metaphor and be imaginative in your writing, he continued.

Victony claimed that listening to music aided his recovery throughout the year-plus he spent in a wheelchair as a result of a fatal vehicle accident that also claimed the life of one of his friends.

He claimed that while he was still in a wheelchair, the favorable response his cooperation with Mayorkun, “Holy Father,” received inspired him to complete his project and build on the success.

However, he added that he still feels guilty about not being able to recall how the accident occurred and that “I just feel like maybe things would have been different if I was awake.”
