2023 MTV Video Music Awards: Organisers introduce Afrobeats category, nominate Wizkid, Davido, Rema, others
The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, often known as VMAs, have announced their nominees.
The nominees were revealed today by the organizers.
For the first time in the award’s history, an Afrobeats category was added to the nominations, according to DAILY POST.
Nigerian nominees dominated the new Afrobeats category. The only non-Nigerian in the category was the singer Libianca from Cameroon.
Following are the contenders in the category of Afrobeats:
“Rush” by Ayra Starr – Mavin Global Holdings
“It’s Plenty” by Burna Boy is available via Atlantic Records and Spaceship Entertainment Ltd.
“UNAVAILABLE” by Davido and Musa Keys is available via RCA Records and Sony Music U.K.
“Bandana” by Fireboy DML and Asake – Empire Distribution
Libianca Sony Music U.K. and RCA Records’ “People”
“Calm Down” by Rema and Selena Gomez was released by Mavin Global Holdings Ltd., Jonzing World Entertainment, SMG Music, and Interscope Records.
“2 Sugar” by Wizkid and Ayra Starr, Starboy/RCA Records
In the meantime, Rema received two further nominations for her song “Calm Down,” which featured Selena Gomez.
Both “Song of the Year” and “Best Collaboration” nominations were made for “Calm Down.”
On September 12, 2023, the 2023 VMAs are planned to air live from Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center.
With eight nominations, Taylor Swift has the most of any nominee this year.
