Temmie Ovwasa, a former YBNL Princess and musician from Nigeria, has admitted that coming out as a lesbian had a negative impact on her career.
On the most recent episode of the podcast Doyin’s Corner, hosted by former Big Brother Naija housemate Doyinsola David, the self-described queer, revealed this.
She said that disclosing her sexual orientation meant professional suicide and that many banned her as a result.
She stated, “I was working with someone who advised me to find a boyfriend because there are rumors about my sexuality. I won’t be returning to this game, I laugh.
“The individual urged me to find a boyfriend as a way to protect my work. It’s basically professional suicide; what I did was a suicide of my career. I’m highly conscious of it. My job will be destroyed if I come out as gay. Nobody in the majority wants to be associated with [a gay person]. And I’m quite conscious of the effects of my conduct on this. I purposefully took it.
After being announced as the first female signee of the YBNL record, Temmie Ovwasa gained notoriety in 2015.
2020 saw the end of her relationship with the label after a disagreement with rapper label head Olamide.
The same year, she released “E be like say dem swear for me,” the first openly gay record in Nigeria.
