Despite marrying a man who was always in the public eye until his arrest, María Elvira has done the most in keeping her life private.

Talking about her business ventures, María co-owns Delia Real Estate with her ex-husband Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo. However, following Gallardo’s arrest, The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) seized the company. Besides that, Maria is said to be the one in charge of her ex-husband’s wealth, and at the time of his arrest, the drug lord was worth a whopping $1 billion.

She and Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo Divorced After Some Years of Marriage

No record shows when María Elvira Murillo and Miguel Angel Felix got married, but it is known that Maria was his second wife. Felix is described as one of the most feared drug dealers in Mexico’s history. Not only that, but he also co-founded one of the biggest drug-smuggling empires in the country. The drug dealer was first married to a woman who died of leukemia.

Gallardo married Maria Elvira after the death of his first wife, and they lived together for some years before they eventually parted ways. The couple allegedly divorced as a result of extramarital affairs on the side of Miguel Felix, but details of the information are not publicly disclosed.

According to the available information, María Elvira Murillo had two children from her marriage with Miguel Angel Felix, and they are named Miguel Jr. Félix Murillo and Abril Félix Murillo. However, besides their names, nothing further is known about the children, including when they were born, but it is recorded that María Elvira took full custody of them following the divorce.

María Elvira’s Husband, Miguel, is a Notorious Drug Lord

Before his drug smuggling business, Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo worked in the Mexican police as a federal judicial police agent. According to records, Miguel considered his salary too small and not able to solve even his basic needs. Meanwhile, the department he worked in was infamous for corrupt practices, which is where he started to gain the grounds and guts to operate in a world of crime.

Miguel eventually quit his police job and briefly worked as a bodyguard, where he met Pedro Aviles Perez, who would later become his future drug partner. They moved into full-time drug peddling after some time. Gallardo assumed the sobriquets “The Godfather” or “El Padrino” and “The Boss of Bosses” and took charge of all hard substance trafficking businesses in Mexico and some parts of Europe and the United States.

He created numerous streams of income and several fresh channels for smuggling drugs around the nation. After being detained, Gallardo was subsequently charged with many felonies and deaths in 1989. He was found guilty and sentenced to 40 years in prison. Initially spending his sentence at Altiplano Maximum Security Prison in Guadalajara, Maria’s husband’s health began to deteriorate after a while.

Consequently, he was moved to a medium-security prison in Guadalajara, where he has remained to date. Meanwhile, it was once revealed that he got an additional 37 years of jail term added to the original 40 years. This simply means that he would be spending 77 years behind bars.

María Murillo is Depicted in the Netflix Series Narcos Mexico

In November 2018, Narcos: Mexico, an American crime drama streaming television series, was released, and it follows the growth of Mexican drug cartels in the 1980s, including Maria’s husband’s illegal activities. In the series, actress Fernanda Urrejola played the role of María Elvira Murillo. Maria was depicted as being initially very supportive of her husband’s drug dealings.

However, she started being discontented with him when he started devoting all his time to running his cartel, and not only that but also having extramarital relationships with several women and lavishing them with expensive gifts. Maria tried everything she could to convince her husband to run his cartel from their hometown, Sinaloa, to win him back, but he was adamant about her pleas.

As time went on, Felix became very cold with her and later told her that she was not needed anymore. Divorce shortly followed, and Maria got full custody of her children. Later on, after surviving an attempt on his life by the Gulf cartel, Gallardo flew to Sinaloa in search of Maria, and although she initially refused to reunite with him, they later made up after he successfully rigged the 1988 election in favor of the PRI.

However, the joy of their reunion was short-lived following the tragic killing of Guadalupe Leija Serrano and her two children. When Elvira learned that her ex-husband had a role in her death, she violently confronted him and abruptly condemned his acts of brutality. While Felix was trying to calm Maria down during a heated exchange of words, she stabbed him with a knife, and this made him leave her forever and go back to Guadalajara

Where is María Elvira Murillo Now?
