American singer, Swae Lee reveals he is partly Nigerian
Swae Lee, an American vocalist and one-half of the hip-hop group Rae Sremmurd, has admitted that he is partially of Nigerian descent.
The rapper revealed this while explaining his decision to include the Nigerian flag with a tweet announcing his participation in the South African Amapiano wave.
Swae Lee had tweeted that he will be playing with the popular South African genre known as Amapiano, but he also included a Nigerian flag, which South Africans found offensive.
He concluded by writing, “Wait till y’all hear Swae Lee on Amapiano,” and included an emoji of the Nigerian flag.
Furious South Africans flocked to the comments section to accuse Swae Lee of misrepresenting Nigeria as the source of Amapiano and defaming their nation, which is where the song originated.
Swae Lee, however, confirmed in later tweets that his original tweet was misinterpreted.
He claimed that the Nigerian flag was an addition because he is a mixed-race Nigerian.
For the people offended by the flag, I put it because I’m partially Nigerian, he wrote. I made no mention of the genre’s conception in what I said.
The rapper Swae Lee said, “Bigs up to the South Africans for creating this beautiful sh*t.”
