Coup: Tinubu meets governors sharing boundary with Niger
On Sunday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with the governors of the States that border the Niger Republic.
The meeting, which took place at State House in Abuja, was a part of the President’s deliberations on the situation in Niger.
Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Mai Malam Buni (Yobe), Idris Nasir (Kebbi), and Dr. Dikko Radda (Katsina) were among the governors present.
Recall that President Tinubu gave the military junta in the Niger Republic a seven-day deadline to transfer back control to Mohammed Bazoum in his role as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In addition to the ultimatum, Tinubu announced further sanctions during a meeting that took place in Abuja over the weekend. These sanctions include the blocking of Niger’s borders as well as an indefinite halt to power and airline operations.
Tinubu had written to the National Assembly leadership to request permission to send military forces to the troubled Niger, but instead received advise to proceed cautiously in the current situation.
